Summer Dog Hydration Tips Every Pet Parent Should Know
The Importance of Hydration for Dogs—Especially in Summer!
As the summer sun heats up, it’s more important than ever to keep your pup hydrated. But hydration isn’t just about quenching thirst—it plays a vital role in your dog’s overall health and healing process.
☀️ Why Hydration Matters
Just like in humans, water supports nearly every function in a dog’s body. It’s essential for:
Regulating body temperature
Boosting circulation
Lubricating joints
Supporting digestion
Aiding in the detoxification process
Promoting cell regeneration and healing
For pups recovering from illness, surgery, or injury, proper hydration is especially important. It helps deliver nutrients and oxygen to tissues, flush out toxins, and accelerate healing.
💧 Signs Your Dog May Be Dehydrated
Dry nose or gums
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Sunken eyes
Thick, sticky saliva
Panting more than usual
If you notice any of these signs, encourage water intake immediately and contact your vet if symptoms persist.
🐶 Tips to Keep Your Dog Hydrated This Summer
1. Fresh, Clean Water at All Times
Keep bowls full and clean—especially when outside or after walks. Make sure not to use metal bowls that are exposed to the sun outside, as they can get hot and burn your dog’s tongue.
2. Add Water-Rich Foods
Cucumbers, watermelon (seedless), and bone broth are great hydrating treats.
3. Ice Cubes & Frozen Treats
Make pup-safe popsicles using bone broth, goat’s milk, or blended fruit.
4. Use a Pet Fountain
Some dogs prefer running water—it’s fun and encourages them to drink more.
5. Monitor During Activity
Bring water on walks and hikes. Take breaks and avoid peak heat hours. Also remember to keep your pup’s paws safe—hot pavement and sand can burn their paw pads. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet!
🍖 Frozen Bone Broth Treats
These easy frozen treats are not only hydrating, but they also provide joint and gut support from the collagen in bone broth. (My kids LOVE them)
Ingredients:
1 cup dog-safe bone broth (chicken, beef, or turkey) I prefer homemade.
